Welcome artists and soon to be artists! I am writing to you in hopes of helping you improve your work, learn a new technique, and become a better artist in many different aspects. So, let's start with what makes a good artist? Here are a few things to work on before even putting your pencil, paintbrush, crayon, the medium of choice to the paper.
1. Patience- If you want to be an artist, well, you better work on your patience. If you don't have the patience to spend hours, possibly weeks on a new piece, then being an artist is not for you. Creating new work is a slow process, especially if you want it to be worth anything. The best artists in the world still spend countless hours working on a single piece because they are focused on detail, on making sure it is done right, and making it appear to the audience that their talent is unique.
2. Persistence- Artwork is frustrating. When you see a piece that another artist puts on the internet, you don't see the 50 other similar works that were crumpled up in their trashcan. Yes, you are going to screw up A LOT. Each time you screw up, you must force yourself to try again. Perhaps you are on your hundredth drawing of a shaded ball because each one wasn't what you wanted. You have to keep going, you have to keep trying because that is the only way you will get any better.
3. Perfectionism- Yes, you have to be a perfectionist and like it that way. You can see it in the difference between a stick figure and a full body portrait. Perfectionism will also keep you humble. Your work will never be good enough for you. You will drive yourself crazy and you will always improve your artistic ability if you strive to be perfect every time!
